Jenkinsburg Mayor Kenneth Rooks made a public statement at the City Council's February 21 meeting to clarify the city's position on the sale of packaged distilled spirits.

"Jenkinsburg is not petitioning for distilled spirits within the city limits," Rooks said. "This interest is being generated by a citizen within the public sector and in not endorsed by the city."

A copy of this statement in its entirety is available to the public at City Hall.

Mayor Rooks told the Progress-Argus in late January the sale of distilled spirits within the city limits would be a "great way to generate money" and characterized the potential move as a "step out of Hicksville."

The Council also unanimously voted to allocated $1,450 of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) renovation funds to purchase a $146 flag; $304 mat with city logo; $520 black mats; $355 pop-up tent with city logo; $39 for a "Support our Troops" flag, and a $50 set-up fee.

"The pop-up tent will be of good use when we attend events within the county," Rooks said.

There will be an open house held on March 27. The time is tentative from 11a.m. until 4 p.m. Weather permitting there will be both indoor and outdoor events.

Both Mayor Rooks and Jenkinsburg City Council members will be available to engage with the public and hand out "give-a-ways."
