The Flovilla City Council continued to take care of city business even during the quiet days between Christmas and New Year’s Day. On Tuesday, December 29, all council members were present for a public hearing on a request for a business license and a license for serving beer, wine, and distilled spirits.
Patrina Taylor had applied for the two licenses as the new owner of Locals, most recently known as Shakers, at 1637 Highway 42 in Flovilla. No one spoke at the public hearing to object to the granting of either license. According to procedure, the council will vote on the issuance of the business license and beer, wine, and distilled spirits license at the next regular city council meeting on Monday, January 11.
Following the public hearing, Mayor Harvey Norris convened a regular meeting of the council to request a resolution giving him the authority to sign an application for a $475,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Council member Jacqueline Grier made the motion to approve the resolution, and Council member Catherine Watson seconded the motion, which was then approved unanimously.
Flovilla is applying for the CDBG funds to provide a community center for the residences in the city, having “determined that there is an immediate need in the community to have a safe and modern facility that will allow everyone to come together.” The City of Flovilla is committed to provide a cash match of $25,000 for engineering services and grant administration if the grant is awarded and will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water and fire protection improvements associated with the community center.
