Mark Lee Bloomquist, 46, of Merrit Island, Florida was denied bond and is in the Butts County Jail after allegedly accidentally shooting his girlfriend, Sandra Jo Doersam, 46, Merrit Island, following a Saturday, October 24 hunt at the Talarosa Ranch at 599 Nathan Thaxton Road.

According to Sheriff Gene Pope, Doersam was transported to Sylvan Grove Hospital where she was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound to the shoulder.

“Bloomquist said he was putting a .30-.06 rifle back into its case butt first when the rifle went off and stuck Doersam in the shoulder,” said Pope.

Pope said the rifle’s safety was not engaged.

“It was difficult to determine what angle the shot was from,” said Pope. “We haven’t had an autopsy performed yet, and the case remains under investigation.”

Investigators also found marijuana on Bloomquist and determined he was a convicted felon.

Bloomquist was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and involuntary manslaughter.
